When looking to extend GoGuardian filtering and monitoring to students while they are home or away from school, here are a few best practices to consider:
NOTE: Take notes or screenshots of the current configuration prior to changing settings in order to effectively revert to the original settings once any closures have concluded and students are back on campus.
By default, GoGuardian Admin has out of school mode turned off -- this configuration will result in 24/7 filtering and monitoring for student accounts.
To navigate to your Out of School settings, go to manage.goguardian.com > Products > General and scroll down to the section labeled Scheduling.
If out of school mode is set with an IP range, delete the range to open up filtering and monitoring to students online at home or away from school.
With the IP range removed, the time and days of the week for GoGuardian Admin's Filtering and Monitoring can be limited while not taking IP address/physical location into consideration.
Another setting to consider: Chromebooks only
If the students are not going to be taking their devices home, but being asked to complete assignments while using their personal Chromebooks and or Computers, Super Users can disable this feature to enable monitoring and filtering on other types of devices with Operating Systems that support Chrome Extensions, such as Windows and macOS. This will not extend to mobile devices such as tablets and phones, for which the mobile Google Chrome browser app does not support extensions.
NOTE: This setting requires Super User access to be able to modify.
This setting is also located at manage.goguardian.com > Products > General.
Final setting to consider: GoGuardian Teacher Scheduling by Day / IP restrictions
Navigate to the GoGuardian Teacher product settings at manage.goguardian.com -> Products -> Teacher, and scroll down to Enable Scheduling by Day.
- Be sure to audit and modify the day-level time scheduling so that the days/times here fit the school/district's remote learning policy.
- The IP Restrictions setting at the bottom of the Teacher settings page is typically used to control GoGuardian Teacher so that students are not monitored while they are connected to networks outside of the school. Be sure to remove any specific IP addresses here to ensure student history and live screens can be viewed outside of a school's public IP address range.
With all these changes, GoGuardian will now be functional to filter devices in unmanaged network environments. Please take into consideration that not all students will have a reliable network environment to facilitate ideal functionality.
There are many factors that can prevent a student from loading GoGuardian properly on personal devices:
- Browser is not up to date
- Network/firewall conditions
- Not signing into a chrome browser
- Not being online
- Computer is off
Be sure to set a calendar reminder for the date prior to school starting back up to reconfigure these settings with the appropriate days, hours, and IP ranges set to avoid causing any confusion or lack of filtering when school starts again!
