What is Extension Transparency?
Extension Transparency is a new feature that will display teacher session information to students. The extension will now turn blue to indicate that a teacher's session is active. With the release of this new feature, we will equip students with more session information like:
Owner of the session (teacher)
Whether a scene applies to the session (indicated by “Some websites are restricted”)
During an active teacher session, students can click on the GoGuardian extension to view the pop-up that appears displaying session information.
New icon appearance for active sessions
With the release of the Extension Transparency pop up messaging, our extension colors have been updated. Previously, during an active session, our extension turned green. Now, in order to be more accessible, it will appear as the icons below. When a student is in an active teacher session, they will see the extension turn to the blue shield with a circle around it.
Why did we do this?
Our Extension(s) play a huge role in acting as a gateway to our brand and ecosystem. Students, teachers, and admins alike have become accustomed to seeing both (Chromium M & Chromium) licenses in their extension trays. We strive to increase transparency amongst our users via our extensions to equip users with beneficial information and increase awareness about our extensions. Given the nature of our products, it is important for us to take a proactive approach in being more transparent through our extensions.
In the past, we’ve worked on projects with similar goals - to build a layer of communication between our users and the extensions. From adding names upon hovering over the extensions to changing colors when a student is in a teacher session, we’ve seen the value add by providing more through the extensions. In this next phase, we would like to take a step further by giving our users more information around when our extensions are active/inactive and teacher details increase awareness amongst students/admins.
Transparency is a Platform goal that has increased in priority over the last few quarters. Not only have we seen an increased usage of our tools during distance learning/teaching, we’ve seen an increased demand in providing transparency around our tools as well. Given the nature of our products, taking a proactive approach and being more transparent through our extensions will not only improve trust in our brand, but it will also be a step forward towards achieving our goals for Data Privacy & Transparency.
Who will be able to access this?
This feature will be available to all districts. It is however an opt-in feature. This would mean that the super-user for the district/school will need to enable it in Org Management.
Org Management > Products > Teacher > “Display Session Information to Students” toggle
Currently, the toggle in Organization Management reads, “Display Active Session Status to Students." This will be updated to read, "Provide additional clarity and transparency to students by showing an active indicator in the browser extension when GoGuardian Teacher Sessions are active."
