Website Categories Overview
What are Website Categories?
GoGuardian uses artificial intelligence to categorize thousands of websites into various different categories. With GoGuardian Admin, admins can allow or block entire categories to prevent students from reaching unwanted pages. Filtering with categories is a fast and easy way for admins to block a wide array of sites at once.
Where can I access Website Categories?
Website Categories are accessible in GoGuardian Admin. To view the Website Categories, you will need to navigate to a policy:
- On the left of the Admin Page, click on Configuration
- You'll be taken to the default At School Mode screen
- Click on any policy
- Click on Website Categories on the left pane
Here you will see a list of all Website Categories. Some categories have an arrow icon indicating that there are subcategories below. Clicking on that arrow icon will expand to show the subcategories. For example, here is the expanded Aggressive Behavior category:
Website Categories Graphical Update
The functionality of Website Categories has not changed, but the new look should make it easier and clearer to use.
Website Categories within a policy
The primary difference in this view is that rather than undescriptive check boxes on the right side, indicating whether a subcategory will be blocked or not, there is a very clear Block/Allow drop down option. This will make it obvious for admins if they are blocking a category of sites or not.
The Block/Allow drop down menu is straight forward:
Website categories within Activity
It is also possible to view categories within the Activity view of GoGuardian Admin.
In this view, in the category column, you may see several different categories/choices.
- Appropriate category
- The appropriate category is intentionally vague, and is meant for sites where the content could be anything
- YouTube and Google are two very popular examples
- If a category is listed on a single line, that means it's just one category
- College/Careers is shown here, and is one category
- If there are two or more lines shown, it means the site belongs to two or more categories
- Here we can see freeonlinegames.com belongs to both the Online Games category as well as the Games category
There is also a new Uncategorized box, which is clickable.
Note: Even though GoGuardian's AI has categorized thousands of sites, hundreds of new sites are created every day. It is somewhat common for a site to be uncategorized by GoGuardian.
Making a Categorization Suggestion
In the Activity view, it is possible for Admins to make recommendations to GoGuardian for how a site should be categorized. This can be done for both already categorized sites and uncategorized sites.
Suggesting a category for an Uncategorized Site
When a site is Uncategorized, it will show the Uncategorized button in the activity view.
Clicking on this button will bring up the Suggest Website Category window.
Here, you can click the dropdown box and select whichever categories you believe this site fits into.
Once one or many (there is no limit on how many you choose) suggested categories are chosen, they will appear in the box and can be confirmed by selected the blue Confirm Suggestions button.
When you click Confirm Suggestions, you will receive a brief confirmation pop out on the upper right hand side of the window.
These suggestions will then be sent to GoGuardian to be reviewed and potentially implemented.
Note: Website Categories apply to all GoGuardian customers. They are not specific to individual organizations. Suggesting a category does not necessarily mean it will be implemented, but will help GoGuardian make the right choice for site categories for all of our customers. Thank you.
Suggesting a Website Categorization Edit
There is one more new button that allows Admins to suggest an edit to an already categorized site. Sometimes the AI will incorrectly categorize a site, so suggesting an edit to sites is a great way to help GoGuardian ensure accuracy and consistency.
If you hover over a website category in the Activity view, a new Edit option appears with a pencil icon.
Clicking this Edit button will bring up the Improve Web Categorization window:
Note that it automatically fills in the categories to which it already belongs. There are several things you can do in this window.
- You may answer if the website is categorized correctly by clicking Yes or No.
- You can click any of the small X icons next to any of the existing categories to remove them.
- You may click the drop down button and add categories you believe this site belongs to
After you have either added or removed categories, simply click Confirm Suggestions. You will receive the same notification as if you were suggesting a category for an uncategorized site.
